Unlike Belindi Kalenda, Major Showolter came to New Republic Intelligence by way of the military intelligence branch of The Rebel Alliance. His thick build and his ability to blend in among Imperial personnel made him a good candidate for infiltrating Imperial military installations. Now that the Empire is no longer the enemy, Showolter's somewhat distinctive appearance is a bit more of a liability than NRI likes. Consequently, Showolter draws the supervisory roles, while people such as Kalenda get out in the field. Being assigned to safeguard the Yuuzhan Vong defector, Elan, is Showolter's first real action in quite some time.

Almost from Showolter's first meeting with Elan, though, he has been more of a living shield. When a Yuuzhan Vong assassin infiltrates the safe house on Wayland and almost kills the defector, Showolter gets in the way long enough to sustain severe injuries. After recovering in a Bacta Tank, Showolter is assigned to safeguard Elan as she is moved to a new safe house.

The Yuuzhan Vong, this time represented by The Peace Brigade, learns Elan's location and tries to retrieve her from aboard the passenger freighter Queen of Empire. Though Showolter spots their agents- and realizes his cover has been blown- it's too late; Peace Brigade agents search the Queen deck by deck, cabin by cabin. Wounded by Peace Brigaders posing as his New Republic Intelligence contacts, Showolter can barely walk, let alone protect Elan and her "Familiar" Vergere.

Fortunately, also aboard The Queen of Empire is a man Showolter knew could get the job done: Han Solo.
